The Bourne Identity meets Minority Report in this "truly wild ride" (RT Book Reviews) set in a futuristic Detroit—the first in #1 New York Times bestselling author Kim Harrison's Peri Reed Chronicles.
Peri Reed is a Drafter—a special ops agent with the unique ability to jump back forty seconds in time when missions go wrong. But this skill allows her partner, who is responsible for replacing her memory of events, to feed her false memories and set her up as a corrupt agent.

Working with Silas, a broody, intriguing psychologist trying to bring Opti corruption to light, Peri begins to piece her twisted reality together as she flees the organization she once trusted implicitly.

Peri is caught: rebuilding the memory of the night she killed her partner risks her sanity and in trying to put an end to Opti, she is only getting closer to the very faction that wants to see her dead. Can she get her revenge, or will her tenuous grip on reality leave her vulnerable all over again?

Peri Reed, the heroine of this entertaining but preposterous near-future SF thriller from bestseller Harrison (The Witch with No Name), is a “drafter,” a spy-like operative with the ability to rewrite short moments in time. Peri must rely on an “anchor,” a person who helps her mentally integrate her newly created history without going crazy. Trouble arises when Peri finds she can’t trust her current anchor (and boyfriend). Her personality begins to fragment during a mission to recover a list of corrupt operatives within Opti, the time-altering governmental organization she works for, and she must find a way to reintegrate while on the run. Opti is opposed by the Alliance, former Opti agents who believe Opti has gone rogue. Both organizations—and Peri—cheerily employ any means to achieve what they consider a desirable end, such as using a virus to limit air pollution. Harrison delivers moments of lyrical intensity when the time lines Peri is “drafting” consolidate into a new reality, but the lack of logic and a goofy plot dissipate the tension. Agent: Richard Curtis, Richard Curtis Associates.

As an elite operative of a government-sponsored organization called Opti, Peri Reed is a valuable commodity. Her ability to jump back in time is extremely rare, and her handlers use her for all manner of operations, many of which fall into a gray area from a legal and moral standpoint. She must rely on her anchor to resolve the dual time lines she creates every time she drafts, and the relationship is by necessity an intimate one. When Peri realizes that her anchor is manipulating her and Opti is riddled with corruption, she tries to break free. But when anyone with anchor training can simply rewrite her memories, how will she ever get to the truth? VERDICT Harrison's latest trilogy, set in a futuristic Detroit, is fast paced but muddled in execution, as the motives of those controlling Peri are left vague, with conspiracies and factions put on the page simply to create conflict. Peri is a hard character to root for, as she spends much of the book cycling between angry and gullible. Admirers of Harrison's "Hollows" books will be disappointed. [See Prepub Alert, 3/30/15.]--MM

Harrison shifts gears with this near-future techno-thriller.In 2030, Agent Peri Reed works for Opti, a secret government organization that's been capitalizing on abilities like hers since the 1960s. Peri is the drafter of the title, someone gifted with the rare ability to rewind time for about 30 seconds; the downside is that she not only forgets the original 30 seconds, but longer periods of time (minutes, weeks, even years). Her partner and lover, Jack, acts as her anchor, working to tie her to the new timeline and helping her recover lost memories. But when the two of them uncover a list of corrupt Opti agents and Peri's name is on it, she learns that both Jack and what she believes to be her past are suspect. Unfortunately, the more information she uncovers about Opti and its nemesis, the alliance, the harder Opti works to erase Peri's memories, leaving her either confused and gullible or confused and angry through much of the book. Fans of Harrison's Hollows novels (The Witch with No Name, 2014, etc.) presumably expect another series about a tough woman who kicks butt, but Peri is no Rachel Morgan. True, Peri's combat skills are impressive; but while the other characters are continually telling each other and the reader how strong and smart and wonderful Peri is, her actions do little to support that view. Although Peri struggles to redefine her role, she's a victim, not a player, for most of the story. The many holes in her memory and her Opti conditioning make her easy to manipulate despite the good instincts she's purported to have; plus, she's frequently distracted by the lures of sex, good food, and expensive, well-tailored clothing. She's too focused on the adrenaline rush and privileges associated with being an elite, pampered agent to convince us that she's capable of selflessly serving a cause. Disappointing.

Harrison, who's been unsettling us with the dark doings in her No. 1 New York Times best-selling "Hollows" series, here introduces a seductive and suspenseful new trilogy. Her heroine? A top-notch special task agent in a futuristic Detroit.
